Fauna

The Fauna can be defined as submediterranean and subcontinental.It is similar to that in the Thracian lowland and quite different from that in the Balkan and the Subbalkan.The grasslands are the habitat of 1153 species Invertebrata, from which 826 are butterflies. 51 species of these butterflies are endemic, 36 of omnivorous coleopterous are rare in Bulgaria, 2 species are in included in the European Red List of IUCN, 8 species are protected by the Berne Convention ,13 species of butterflies are included in the European Red List, and 420 species are defined as rare. Nature Park “Blue Stones” is the only habitat of the species Thanatus imbecillus and Leptorchestes mutilloide,class Spiders (Arachnida). Male individual Litobius (s.str.) uniunguis Matic et Golemansry  from Class Myrapoda and Acanthocreagris sp.n. from class Pseudoscorpiones, which were until now unknown to science, are also of great importance to the diverse animal life.

Vertebrate fauna (Vertebrata) is represented by 244 species , including 9 species of fish (Pisces) , 8 species of amphibians (Amphibia) , 13 species of reptiles (Reptilia), 176 species of birds (Aves) , 38 species of mammals (Mammalia). 191 species of these (or 78 % ) are protected by the Biodiversity Act, the largest number of which is the one of birds – 149 species, followed by mammals – 24 species.45 species are included in the Red List of Bulgaria, 32 of which are endangered ones – carp (Cyprinus carpio), rat snake (Eplaphe longissima), polecat (Vormela peregusna), wolf (Canis lupus), an owl (Bubo bubo), Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca), golden eagle (Aquila chryseatos), small Vulture (Neophron perenopterus) and others. Native species from

Ichthyofauna are brown trout (Salmo trutta), Maritsa barbel (Baebus cyclolepis) and minnow (Phoxinus phoxinus). Commonly spotted species from class Amphibians are salamander (Salamandra salamandra), crested tritons (Triturus vulgaris), common toad (Bufo bufo).

Open meadows are inhabited by Crimean lizard (Podarcis taurica), and sunny spots – of green lizard (Lacerta trineata). The distribution of spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) and Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermani) is limited.Most commonly met is the rat snake (Elaphe hongissima), and the viper (Vipera ammodytes), as well.

Most commonly spotted species from the biggest group vertebrates –the one of the birds (Aves) –  are great tit (Parus major), forest creeper (Certia familiaris), missel (Turdus viscivorus), wood pigeon (Columba palumbus) and many others.Rocky biotopes offer good conditions for nesting of Falconiformes and StrigniformesAlectoris chucar, Monticola saxatilis.Spacious forests, open meadows, rough terrain and caves are habitat of insectivorous (Insectivora), 11 species of bats, rodents, rabbits, 8 species of predators, ofArtio.Hedgehogs (Erinaceus concolor), sharply earred bats (Myotis blithii), squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris), hares (Lepus capensis), jackals (Canis aureus), foxes (Vulpes vulpes), wild boars (Sus scrofa), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and others can also be spotted.
